Anxiety.
When Anxiety Feels Like a Twister
Anxiety is one of the most common experiences that brings people into my consult room.
And more often than not, I hear the same thing: “I just can’t stop thinking.”
Anxiety has this way of revving up our thoughts so fast, it feels like our mind is spinning out of control.
It puts our bodies in a constant state of alert—ready to run, hide, or fight.
Even when there’s no immediate danger, our nervous system doesn’t always get the memo.
And that constant hum of stress? It’s exhausting.
What makes anxiety feel so overwhelming is the inability to stop.
When your mind won’t quiet, when your heart is racing, when the world feels like it’s too much—
It can feel like you’re losing control.
And for many, that moment becomes a tipping point. Panic sets in.
Suddenly, you’re spiraling… and it’s hard to find your way back.
I often describe Anxiety as a Twister.
(Side note: I was obsessed with the Twister movie when I was younger—still am, honestly!)
There’s something about the imagery that just fits.
The chaos. The unpredictability. The way it can sweep in out of nowhere and completely take over.
When you’re in the middle of anxiety, it can feel like you’re being pulled into the suction zone—thoughts spinning, heart racing, everything moving too fast to catch your breath.
But here’s what’s true about twisters:
There is a center.
There is calm, if you can find your way to it.
And that’s the work we often do together in therapy.
We slow down.
We breathe.
We make space for the whirlwind of thoughts and emotions, without letting them carry us away.
We find small, grounding moments—an anchor in the storm.
If anxiety has you caught in a spin, you’re not alone.
There’s a way through.
And you don’t have to navigate the storm by yourself.
If you're ready to find your center again, reach out.
There’s a space here just for you.
